How to Cancel Your Costco Membership Card

There might be different reasons for your decision to cancel your Costco Canada membership card. Let’s talk about how to do that and why this may not be a good idea.

Cancelling your Costco membership card is extremely easy and straight-forward.

You don’t have to wait until the card is supposed to be renewed. You can cancel your membership card at any point by following either of these two methods.

You can call Costco’s customer service from your home and cancel it on the phone. Visit Costco.ca to find their customer service number. It will be a 1-800 number. In Canada the line is both in English and French.

You can also cancel your membership card by visiting your local Costco store. When you are in the store, head to the customer service desk and request a refund. The clerk will ask for your membership card and will also ask for a piece of id to compare with the name on the card.

They will then refund the amount prorated to the days left until the next renewal of your membership. The refunded amount will need to go to the same method of payment that you used to sign up for the membership. In other words, they will ask for the same debit or credit card that you used to sign up.

Why are you cancelling your membership card?

Are you going to cancel your Costco member card because you are moving to a place where there are no Costco stores? Is it because you sold your car and you are not able to go to Costco like before? Is it because your family is smaller now and you don’t need to buy groceries in bulk?

If the answer to any of the above questions is yes, cancelling your membership card is actually a good option. It will allow you to save on the membership fee, and it will help eliminate that impulsive Costco shopping.

If you just feel that the Costco card weighs you down as you always feel guilty when you don’t shop at Costco while paying for the membership, it should not be the main reason to cancel your membership. Costco offers a lot of good deals and savings to its members. This is probably why you signed up for the membership in the first place.

Costco’s prices per unit are usually lower than your local grocery store. Costco also keeps only the best-selling product categories, which simplifies our purchasing decisions. Plus, Costco's return policy is probably the most generous in the country.

Costco is a more complex store which you need to get to know better. Costco pricing is tricky, but easy to understand. Costco’s bulk products and its in-house brand Kirkland give Costco a huge purchasing power with its partners. So we as members get the best prices, even though the variety of products may not be very rich.

Gas prices at your local Costco are usually lower than the gas station close to your place.

Costco employees are paid much better than at any other grocery store. They tend to work there for longer and they rotate through a lot of jobs within the store. This, in turn, translates into better service to clients.

Costco also has different membership levels. You just need to know which card is best for your needs. We did all the calculations for you here. Take a look and see which card is a good match for your grocery needs with Costco.

In a nutshell, Costco will never prevent you from leaving the ship. Your exit will be easy and the refund will be smooth. But before parting ways with this grocery store, ask yourself whether you know Costco well enough and whether you educated yourself well enough to get the best savings from this store.
